‘Manchester City must raise the bar to reel in Arsenal’ – Semenyo rallies the Blues

Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo has challenged his teammates to find another gear in their pursuit of silverware, admitting the champions must close the gap on Arsenal if they are to salvage their season with trophies.

City’s Premier League campaign has been marked by patchy form, with dropped points at key moments threatening to derail their title defence. However, a stirring victory away to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday has reignited belief within Pep Guardiola’s camp, lifting them to second place on 50 points, six adrift of league leaders Arsenal.

Despite enjoying the most prolific goalscoring run of his senior career so far, Semenyo insists personal milestones mean little without collective success.

The 24-year-old says pulling on the sky-blue shirt was a long-held ambition, but believes standards across the squad must rise if City are to remain a dominant force domestically and in cup competitions.

“I always thought, I want to be part of Man City,” Semenyo told Sky Sports. “But the hard work continues. If we want to be as successful as the previous Man City teams have been, we need to catch up with Arsenal now and hopefully win all the other trophies that we’re in.”

“Obviously, there have been results that haven’t gone our way, and there have been a couple of draws here and there. The manager said to us before the Newcastle game that we need to have that fire in our bellies again. That fire in our bellies is what’s going to kick-start a new run for us, and hopefully, us being victorious at the end of the season is the plan,” he added.

Semenyo has wasted no time settling into life in Manchester, already finding the net four times across all competitions since his arrival.

With confidence growing and momentum slowly building, he will be keen to keep his scoring streak alive when City host Fulham at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.
