This summer will be a critical one in the career of Super Eagles utility man Christantus Uche, as his move to Crystal Palace has far more complexity to it than first meets the eye, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.
The Nigerian joined the Premier League club last summer off the back of an impressive season with Getafe in La Liga, but things have not gone as planned for the forward since his arrival in south London. Uche has struggled to break into Oliver Glasner’s first-team plans, managing just 14 appearances for Palace – all from the bench.
That is a significant problem, because it has emerged that his move to Selhurst Park was a loan deal rather than a permanent transfer. The agreement included a clause that would have made the deal permanent, but it required him to make at least 10 starts for the club, a threshold he has fallen well short of.

The backstory adds another layer of complication. Getafe, who were in dire financial straits, chose to cash in on Uche’s form by arranging the deal to ease their money troubles.
The funds generated allowed them to sign five players. However, the arrangement drew the attention of La Liga’s financial authorities, who discovered the deal was not a permanent transfer and subsequently cut Getafe’s squad budget down to €16 million.
With nine games left in the season, triggering the permanent transfer clause at the originally agreed figure is now out of the question.
A return to Getafe is complicated too. With the Spanish club already carrying five loan signings from the deal that took Uche to England, reintegrating him would place fresh strain on a squad and wage bill that has little room to absorb it unless they move players out first.

A source close to Uche’s camp exclusively confirmed the situation to Footy-Africa, but stressed that the player himself is keeping his focus firmly on football.
“Uche is focused on finishing the season well with Palace and he doesn’t bother about everything outside the pitch,” the source said. “As a player, he always wants to play and I am sure he will get more games before the end of the season. Palace have the Conference League ahead of them and he has already shown what he can do in that competition.”
“For now, the priority is working hard and getting more games for the club, and hopefully a solution will be found. He wants to remain in England and is a big fan of the Premier League. He is not unaware of everything we have discussed, but he is not interested in those things right now. He is fully focused on his football and the remainder of the season,” the source concluded.
There is also a slim possibility that Crystal Palace could still sign him on a permanent basis, though any fresh negotiations would almost certainly be at a significantly lower price than the €15 million valuation attached to him – a figure Getafe may be forced to accept given the club’s financial position.
Should Palace pass on signing him and the 22-year old moves elsewhere, Getafe’s hand will be further weakened.
