Ugandan international and attacker Calvin Kabuye has sealed a loan move to Swedish second tier side Varbergs BoIS from the country’s top-flight outfit Mjällby AIF, penning a short-term contract until the end of November this year.

Following his unveiling on Thursday, the 22-year-old versatile player made his ambitions clear at Varbergs BoIS, targeting promotion to the top division. The youngster underlined his desire to earn more quality time on the pitch more than the case has been with his parent team, Mjällby AIF.

In an exclusive phone interview with Footy-Africa, Kabuye indicated that Varbergs BoIS made their goals for the ongoing season clear to him, before agreeing to a deal, and that they match with his individual aspirations. After 14 games, Varbergs BoIS sit fourth on the table with 25 points, behind table leaders, Kalmer FF.

“My goal and target is clear and that’s to guide my new team to the top-flight. And, this automatically comes with finishing in the top two positions. The club is also focused on that, and everyone at the club is aiming towards that. We have to work for the top levels and I can only add to this,” he exclusively spoke to Footy-Africa.

Kabuye, whose Transfermarkt valuation is estimated at €350,000, is convinced that the upward trajectory is only going to get better for the club, as they gear up to mount a title challenge in the second division “We are going to give ourselves a chance for the title, and that will be shown in every game that we’ll play. I want to be on the pitch, I just want to keep playing.”

“All these things are very achievable, and we shall not stop at anything to get there. On a more personal level, I obviously want to improve my numbers in terms of the goals, assists, defending and how well I help my teammates perform to achieve positive results. Eventually, if we all put in the work as a unit, we shall get there.”

In the 2024/25 season at Mjällby AIF, he played five games after joining from Sandvikens in February. At Sandvikens, Kabuye had made 30 competitive appearances, as he scored ten goals and assisted on one occasion. That represented an improvement, as he had netted four goals and assisted three at Ostersunds FK in 29 matches in 2023.

Meanwhile, internationally, after several summons, Kabuye managed to make his long awaited debut for the Uganda national senior team, the Cranes against Congo Brazzaville, as they sealed qualification to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. He has since played three times in the colors.
