Ghana and Lorient centre-back Nathaniel Adjei exclusively to Footy-Africa says he is staying positive and focused as he continues his recovery from a long-term ankle injury that has sidelined him since November 2024.

The 22-year-old, who made his Black Stars debut last year, has not played a competitive game in 2025 after suffering the setback that required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Adjei revealed that his recovery is on track and he has recently reached an important milestone.

“It’s been a tough period for me, mentally and physically,” he admitted. “But I thank God that things are improving. The screws have been removed from my leg, and I’ve started running again. That alone feels like progress.”

Adjei had been tipped to play a key role in Ghana’s defensive set-up after making his senior debut, but the injury stalled his momentum. Still, the former Hammarby IF player is taking things one step at a time as he works his way back.

“I’m trying not to rush. The most important thing is to come back fully fit and in top shape. I want to be stronger than I was before the injury. The medical team has been great, and I’m staying disciplined with my rehab schedule.”

With Ghana in the thick of the qualification race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Adjei hasn’t given up hope of making it into the final squad, should the Black Stars secure a spot in the tournament.

“Every player dreams of playing at the World Cup. It’s what motivates me every day. I know I have to prove myself all over again, but I’m ready for that challenge.”

Adjei made just nine appearances last season in French Ligue 2. He has one year left on the two-year contract he signed for Lorient, who will be playing in Ligue 1 in the upcoming season.
