English Football League (EFL) Championship side Birmingham City FC is advancing in the pursuit for Ugandan youngster and right-back Nathan Asiimwe from Charlton Athletic FC, Footy-Africa sources have exclusively learned.

The defender, whose versatility allows him to play across the entire backline, drew massive admiration from Stoke City manager Chris Davies after impressing while at Walsall FC on loan in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.

An exclusive source at Asiimwe’s agency, World in Motion, confirmed the interest, indicating that the two clubs opened talks at the start of the week, with a five-year contract offer on the table. Birmingham have offered €420,000 to Charlton for the 20-year-old.

β€œChris (Davis) has sanctioned the move, having watched him during his loan spell at Walsall. Birmingham have submitted an initial offer of €420,000, with the plan to sign him for the next five years. This is slightly short of what Charlton want, but the talks are positive and advancing well. Nathan (Asiimwe) wants the move and this will play an important part in the negotiations,” the source exclusively told Footy-Africa.

Meanwhile, Asiimwe has been through the Charlton Athletic ranks since 2017 as a 12-year-old. His League One debut with the club came in May 2023 in the final game of the 2022/23 season in a two-all draw with Cheltenham Town. Last campaign (2023/24), he played 23 games in the league, EFL Cup and the FA Cup.

The young defender, whose TransferMarket valuation is estimated at €125,000, signed his first professional contract at the start of the 2023/24 season. The contract was later in December 2023 renewed and improved, as he was tied down for three years. Last campaign on loan at Walsall, he made 13 appearances having joined them in January.

Internationally, Asiimwe has made one cap for the Uganda senior national team, the Cranes, having received several summons in 2024 and this year.
