Super Eagles centre-back Semi Ajayi’s move to Hull City has taken many by surprise, especially considering the expectation that he would extend his stay at West Bromwich Albion.
While the switch caught some off guard, the former Super Eagles winger, Garba Lawal, in an exclusive interview for Footy-Africa, believes the Tigers have landed a bargain.
He further praised the defender’s experience and insisted that Ajayi still has plenty to offer at this stage in his career.
Despite his contract expiring after six years at the Hawthorns, there were strong indications, that the 31-year-old would sign a one-year extension with the Baggies.
However, the deal never materialised, opening the door for a fresh chapter in the Championship.
Instead of re-committing to West Brom, Ajayi opted to sign with Hull City, a move that keeps him in the English second tier and offers him a chance to continue playing regular football.
“I honestly do not understand why West Brom did not offer him a new deal,” Lawal said. “He’s a solid player, and since coming back from that long injury layoff, he’s shown great composure and physical strength.”
Lawal also pointed to Ajayi’s recent form with the Nigerian national team, particularly in friendlies where the defender looked sharp and dependable.
“Semi looked good in the last Super Eagles outing. He’s still got fire in him, and Hull City are lucky to have snapped him up.”
With a career that includes spells in both the Premier League and Championship, plus a steady run with the Super Eagles, Ajayi brings a wealth of experience. Lawal is confident that the move will work out well for both player and club.
“I think West Brom missed a trick. At Hull, he’ll be a leader at the back, and I’m sure he’ll prove his worth,” he added.
For Ajayi, the new deal represents not just a fresh start, but also an opportunity to reassert himself as one of the league’s top defenders. Hull City, who are hoping to mount a serious push for promotion, may have just found a key piece to shore up their backline.
