Ghana’s road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations could become significantly more demanding after the Black Stars were placed in Pot 2 ahead of Tuesday’s qualifying draw.

The draw ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 19 at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association in Cairo, with proceedings expected to begin at 12:00 GMT as the countdown to Africa’s biggest football showpiece officially gathers momentum.

The 2027 edition of the tournament will mark a historic occasion, with East African neighbours Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda set to co-host the competition for the first time. The finals are slated to be held from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

However, Ghana’s seeding in Pot 2 leaves the four-time African champions exposed to potentially difficult opponents from Pot 1.

Heavyweights such as Morocco, Senegal and Nigeria are among the nations the Black Stars could be paired against in the qualification phase.

The situation could become even more complicated if Ghana are drawn into a group containing one of the host countries, particularly Kenya or Tanzania. Despite automatically qualifying for the tournament as co-hosts, the three East African nations will still participate in the qualifiers.

CAF’s regulations state that in groups involving a host nation, only one additional team will qualify for the finals instead of the usual two, dramatically increasing the level of competition and reducing margin for error.

The qualification campaign will feature 48 countries split into 12 groups of four teams each. Normally, the top two sides from every group will secure places at the tournament, but groups featuring hosts will operate under an adjusted qualification rule.

Ghana enter the draw under pressure following a disappointing AFCON qualifying campaign last time out. The Black Stars failed to reach the tournament in Morocco after finishing bottom of their group behind Angola, Sudan and Niger in what became one of the country’s most disappointing recent football setbacks.

CAF has also tightened the qualification calendar because of the relatively short gap between the draw and the tournament itself.

The entire campaign will be completed across three FIFA international windows.

The opening two rounds of matches are scheduled between September 21 and October 6, 2026. Matchdays three and four will then follow from November 9 to 17, 2026, before the final round of fixtures concludes between March 22 and 30, 2027.
