Former Nigeria U-23 defender Godswill Ekpolo in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa has described the 2025/26 season with AEK Larnaca as a positive one despite the club falling short of its primary objective.
The 31-year-old defender played a key role for the Cypriot side throughout the campaign, helping the club secure qualification for European competition next season.
Ekpolo was ever present in the Larnaca team this season raking in 48 games across all competitions adding five assists to be one of the reliable players on the team this season.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, the former Barcelona youth defender discussed his season, contract situation, and life in Cyprus.
How would you rate this season with your club?
“I would rate this season as a good one, although we did not achieve our primary goal, which was to win the Cypriot League.
However, we were able to achieve our secondary objective, which was qualifying for European competition.
Overall, it was a positive season from both a personal and team perspective, with some important achievements along the way.”

Which match would you consider your best performance, and which was your worst?
“I can’t point to a specific game and say it was my best or worst because every match has its ups and downs throughout the 90 minutes. Even in games where I performed well, there is always room for improvement and learning.
Likewise, in matches where I was not at my best, there were valuable lessons to take away. Every match is an opportunity to learn, grow, and become a better player.”

Your contract was extended for another year. How do you feel about that, and are you considering signing a new deal afterward?
“My contract was extended automatically because of a clause that required me to feature in at least 60 percent of the team’s matches. By the grace of God, I was able to meet that requirement, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue with the club.
As for signing another contract after this one or seeking a new challenge elsewhere, that is not entirely up to me. I choose to follow God’s will for my life because he knows what is best for me. If it is God’s will for me to remain at the club, I will stay. If not, I will move on to wherever he leads me.”

How has life been in Cyprus?
“Life in Cyprus has been very good. I feel truly blessed to live in a place where some of the Apostles of Jesus Christ once travelled and ministered.
Football wise, the fans are incredible and have a way to making you feel wanted and Cyprus is a beautiful country as a whole. It has been a wonderful experience, both professionally and personally.”
