According to Footy-Africa exclusive source, Ghanaian left-back Ebenezer Annan declined offers from major European clubs Rangers, Anderlecht and Feyenoord in order to sign a 3-year deal with French Ligue 2 side AS Saint-Étienne.

The deal worth €2.5 million from Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade has been finalised and the 22-year-old signed a contract until 2028 with an option for an additional year.

While several clubs, including Rangers, Anderlecht and Feyenoord, showed strong interest in Annan, Saint-Étienne emerged as the most convincing option by offering not just a competitive package but a clear commitment to the player’s long-term development.

Annan’s agency, ArthurLegacy Sports, exclusively told Footy-Africa that the decision to move was based on a broader vision for the player’s career.

“We considered what would benefit his career in the long run,” a representative said. “While playing in the Champions League is always important, we felt this move offered a better environment for his overall development.”

The deal was finalised smoothly, with both player and club aligned on expectations. A key condition was the promise of consistent playing time, which was central to Annan’s thinking as he weighed up his next step.

“They presented a project that prioritised his progress. It wasn’t just about adding depth to their squad; they showed genuine belief in his abilities and offered a clear path forward,” the agency added.

Annan made 19 appearances for Red Star last season, helping the Serbian giants secure a domestic double, winning both the league and the national cup. Despite being in contention for a place in this season’s UEFA Champions League, he opted for a move that would guarantee regular football in a competitive environment.

After earlier stints with Imolese in Italy and FK Novi Pazar in Serbia, where he impressed with 28 and 32 appearances respectively, Annan now begins the next chapter of his career in France.

He will wear the number 19 shirt for Saint-Étienne.
