Ugandan international and attacker Farouk Miya has neared a switch to Greek second-tier side GS Ilioupolis, ending an agonizingly lengthy spell of over two years without a club, Footy-Africa confirms.
Exclusively speaking to Footy-Africa, Miya’s personal manager Eugene Sepuya at the Sepuya Inc Agency, revealed that the move has already been agreed with the free agent, and that he will bag in the region of €155,000 and €7,000 on sign-on bonuses and monthly salary, respectively.
“Miya has already agreed to join GS Ilioupolis in a deal that will see him sign for €155,000 as signing bonuses and €7,000 wages on a two-year contract. Negotiations have been ongoing for the past two weeks, and for Miya, he needed assurances of game time before making a decision. He’s been out for too long, and now, he wants to play to regain his spot at the national team,” the manager exclusively told Footy-Africa.
The midfielder has been without a club since May 2023, after his would-be spell with Ukrainian side FC Lviv failed to kickoff due to political unrest in the country. He had joined them from Turkish second-tier side Caykur Rizespor.
In his last spell while at Rizespor, where he spent the entire 2022/23, Miya put up decent performances, as he played 22 times across the Turkish League One and the domestic Cup. That season, he netted four times, and assisted on three occasions.
Currently valued by TransferMarket at €100K, Miya has previously featured for another Turkish side Konyaspor for two seasons, Croatia’s HNK Gorica (on loan), Azerbaijan’s Sabail FK (loan), as well as Belgian giants Standard Liege and Mouscron (loan).
In Uganda, Miya remains a national hero, having netted the goal that sent the country to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, marking their first continental engagement in 48 years. He also scored Uganda’s only goal at that tournament, securing the country’s sole point in a 1-1 draw with Mali. He has amassed 66 caps for the Uganda Cranes.
