Record Uganda Premier League champions SC Villa are edging closer to securing the services of seasoned attacking midfielder Allan Kateregga, Footy-Africa understands.
The Jogoos have reportedly intensified negotiations with the experienced playmaker, who is currently without a club following his departure from Rwanda Police FC. Discussions between the two parties are understood to have progressed significantly, with Villa emerging as the frontrunners for his signature.
Kateregga, widely recognised by his βDancing Rastaβ nickname, became a free agent after Rwanda Police released him at the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign as part of a broader restructuring of their squad. During his spell with the Kigali-based outfit, he helped them capture the 2024 Rwanda Super Cup.
The 33-year-old brings considerable experience accumulated across several leagues on the continent and beyond. His career has taken him through Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Iraq and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with previous spells at SC Victoria University, BUL FC and KCCA FC, as well as Tusker FC, AFC Leopards, Cape Town City, Maritzburg United, Erbil SC and FC Saint-Γloi Lupopo.
A technically gifted and left-footed operator, Kateregga has long been regarded for his ability to unlock defences, dictate attacking moves and provide an additional creative outlet from midfield.
His international pedigree further strengthens his appeal. Kateregga represented the Uganda Cranes at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and accumulated eight senior caps for the national team.
Villa’s pursuit comes as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the 2026/27 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season, which gets underway on August 28.
The Jogoos, who ended last season in third place, will begin their campaign at Wankulukuku against Kitara FC, and the potential arrival of Kateregga would inject another layer of experience and creativity into their midfield.
KCCA FC are also understood to have expressed interest in the veteran midfielder, but Villa have now moved into pole position as negotiations gather pace.
Should the deal be concluded, Kateregga would represent another significant addition to a Villa squad that has already welcomed Steven Mugisha, versatile defender John Asiimwe and forward Isaac Gumperom during the current transfer window.
