English League One side Burton Albion are pushing to sign Uganda international Steven Sserwadda on transfer deadline day as the midfielder continues to rebuild his career after a lengthy injury layoff, Footy-Africa can exclusively reveal.
Sserwadda, a former KCCA FC player, currently plays for Connecticut United in the United States on loan from Major League Soccer outfit New York Red Bulls.
The 24-year-old has emerged as a target for Burton as clubs make their final moves before the transfer window closes, with his recent run of consistent football helping to reignite interest in his services.
Sserwadda has featured 14 times in 16 possible matches for Connecticut United this season and has also worn the captain’s armband on several occasions, underlining his growing importance to the side.
His resurgence comes after a difficult spell on the sidelines. Sserwadda’s last appearance for the Uganda Cranes came in 2023 against Tanzania, a match in which he suffered a serious injury that subsequently kept him out of action for an extended period.
The midfielder has since worked his way back to full fitness and is gradually rediscovering the form that once marked him out as one of Uganda’s promising young talents.
Sserwadda was part of Uganda’s squad at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he featured alongside a talented generation that included Aziz Kayondo, Kenneth Semakula, Bobosi Byaruhanga and Isma Mugulusi.
His return to regular competitive football has now placed him back on the radar in England, with Burton Albion exploring the possibility of securing his signature before the deadline.
For Sserwadda, a move to Burton would represent another significant step in his comeback and an opportunity to test himself in the English professional game after rebuilding his career in the United States.
The former KCCA midfielder’s immediate future could therefore be decided in the final hours of deadline day, with Burton Albion keen to bring the Uganda international to the Pirelli Stadium.
