Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo’s proposed move to Turkish side Gençlerbirliği collapsed after the club cut its initial salary offer by half, Footy-Africa can report.
Sibo had reached an agreement to join Gençlerbirliği as a free agent on a two-year deal worth €1 million per year, with an option for an additional season.
However, the Turkish club later revised the offer to €500,000 annually because of its financial situation.
Sibo rejected the new terms, with concerns also raised by Gençlerbirliği’s recent financial difficulties. The club had only recently had a transfer ban lifted.
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Sibo was unwilling to risk potential salary delays.
“The initial agreement was based on completely different financial terms. When Gençlerbirliği came back with €500,000, Sibo decided not to continue with the deal,” the source told Footy-Africa.
Gençlerbirliği subsequently signed Senegalese defensive midfielder Cheikh Niasse instead.
Sibo eventually secured a move to Libya, agreeing to join champions Al-Swehly in a deal worth $10 million over two years, with an option for a further year.
“The assurances from Al-Swehly were great. Sibo was convinced about the club’s commitment,” the source added.
The midfielder has already started training with Al-Swehly and is expected to make his debut against Zanzibar’s KVZ FC in the CAF Champions League on Saturday.
