Cameroon’s preparations for the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations have taken a dramatic turn, with newly appointed head coach David Pagou unveiling a final squad that noticeably excludes several of the nation’s most recognisable figures. The announcement comes just days after the abrupt dismissal of Marc Brys, adding another layer of intrigue to the Indomitable Lions’ buildup to the tournament.

Pagou’s list features a bold mix of youth and form players, but the real headline is who didn’t make the cut. Andre Onana, Vincent Aboubakar, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, and Michael Ngadeu have all been left out, a decision that has stunned supporters and pundits alike.

While Napoli midfielder Anguissa is confirmed to be out due to injury, the federation offered no explanation for the omissions of Onana, Aboubakar or Ngadeu.

For goalkeeper Onana, the latest snub adds to an already turbulent international chapter. The Manchester United shot-stopper has endured a rollercoaster ride with Cameroon, sent home during the Qatar 2022 World Cup, and later losing his starting spot at the 2023 AFCON after arriving late to camp.

Captain Vincent Aboubakar also misses out despite his leadership and experience, raising questions about the direction Pagou intends to take as he reshapes the team on short notice.

Cameroon will need to settle quickly. The Indomitable Lions have been drawn into a tricky Group F, where they will face defending champions Ivory Coast, as well as Gabon and Mozambique, a lineup that promises intense competition from Matchday one.

Pagou’s overhaul signals a new era, though one shadowed by uncertainty. Whether this shake-up ignites fresh energy or destabilises, the campaign will soon be tested on Africa’s biggest stage.
