Barely five hours after putting pen to paper on a five-year permanent deal from BST Galaxy FC, Gambian youngster Musa Njie announced his arrival in style at Swedish Allsvenskan side Östers IF.

The 18-year-old forward scored on his debut in a 4–0 friendly victory over Karlskrona on Wednesday, instantly showcasing the qualities that convinced the club to secure his long-term services.

His agent, Modou Beyai, in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa, described the transfer as a significant achievement filled with challenges.

“Honestly, with Musa it’s been immense. A lot of work has gone in behind the scenes from everyone around him,” Beyai noted, revealing that the forward had drawn strong interest from top clubs in Norway, Austria and several Swedish sides. “But the project and long-term career plan presented by Östers IF stood out.”

Beyai added that Sanyang’s success at the club played a role in Njie’s decision:

“Seeing how Youssoupha went there, succeeded and eventually became Östers’ record transfer, I felt that bringing another player of similar quality made perfect sense for following a similar upward trajectory.”

Njie’s path to Sweden, however, was not without obstacles. Earlier this year, he trained with Östers and a deal was expected to be completed before complications stalled the move.

“I’m genuinely happy we managed to overcome that hurdle,” Beyai said. “Now he can begin an exciting chapter in Sweden with Östers IF,” he added.

The agent described Njie as fast, explosive and strong in one-on-one situations, perfectly fitting Östers’ attacking philosophy. The club had the opportunity to assess him both during his initial stint in Sweden and later during a scouting trip to The Gambia in November, where the final steps of the transfer took shape.

Beyond talent, Beyai highlighted Njie’s discipline and sacrifice — traits he believes set him apart.

“Musa was always one of the first players at BST’s training sessions, waking up at 5am and travelling from Kartong to Yundum to be there by 7am. His sacrifices have paid off,” he said. “Like I always tell young players: hard work always beats talent, and Musa is another clear example.”

Njie, who finished last season as BST Galaxy’s top scorer, becomes the second Gambian to join Östers IF after Youssoupha Sanyang’s move in 2024. The club views the teenager as a like-for-like successor to Sanyang, who impressed before earning a record transfer away from Växjö. With such expectations, Njie’s bright debut is a promising sign for both player and club.

With an eye-catching debut already behind him, Njie’s journey at Östers IF begins with optimism and the promise of continuing The Gambia’s growing footprint in European football.
