Gambian defender Musa Jatta has taken a significant step forward in his professional career after completing a permanent transfer to Swedish club Östers IF from Finnish side AC Oulu.

The four-year deal, revealed two days ago by Footy-Africa exclusive, underlines both the player’s rising profile in European football and Östers IF’s long-term belief in his abilities.

The transfer, according to Jatta’s representative Modou Beyai, was not an overnight decision but the result of careful planning and patience. Beyai disclosed that concrete interest in the 22-year-old defender dates back to last year, including a formal offer from Slovenia. However, after consultations with the player, the decision was made for Jatta to remain at AC Oulu and complete the season before reassessing the best pathway for his development.

That patience paid off. Over the past months, Jatta attracted attention from clubs across several European leagues, including the Czech Republic, Turkey, Ukraine and Sweden. In the end, Östers IF emerged as the preferred destination, largely due to the club’s clear sporting vision and structured development plan for the Gambian international.

“What convinced us most was Östers’ sporting plan and overall project,” Beyai explained in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa. “They presented a clear vision for Musa and how he fits into the team.”

One of Jatta’s standout attributes is his versatility in defence. Comfortable both as a centre back and a left back, he offers tactical flexibility—an asset that Östers IF value highly.

Nevertheless, the club was clear about how they intend to utilise him. Sporting Director Ola Larsson described Jatta as “a left-footed center back who can also play left back,” while emphasizing that he is primarily seen as a central defender. That clarity, Beyai noted, was a key factor in finalising the deal.

Beyond the footballing project, personal connections also played a role. Jatta spoke with fellow Gambians Musa Njie and Youssoupha Sanyang, both of whom are familiar with the club and its environment. Their positive feedback further reassured him about making the move to Sweden.
