Heart of Midlothian have moved decisively in the transfer market, securing the services of highly-rated Ugandan forward Rogers Mato in a deal that strengthens their attacking options for the remainder of the campaign.

The 22-year-old joins the Edinburgh club on loan from North Macedonian outfit FK Vardar until the end of the season, with the move subject to international clearance and Scottish FA approval. Hearts have already agreed terms on a permanent switch, with Mato set to sign a three-year contract at Tynecastle once his current deal with Vardar expires in the summer.

Mato arrives in Scotland with an impressive CV despite his young age. He is already a regular for the Uganda national team, boasting 41 senior caps and eight international goals. Among those strikes was a crucial effort at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals, underlining his growing reputation on the continental stage.

At club level, the forward has enjoyed a prolific spell in the Balkans. His return of 12 goals in just 13 appearances for Vardar this season played a key role in driving the club to the top of the domestic league, catching the attention of several suitors before Hearts moved to secure his signature.

Speaking to the official Hearts website, Head Coach Derek McInnes said:

β€œIt’s great work from the club to get Rogers in during this window and I’m really pleased that he’s here and ready to go. He’s a livewire player, always looking to attack and cause the opposing defence problems.

He’s been in to meet the boys and has made a good first impression, and we’re all looking forward to working with him.”

Mato is expected to link up with his new teammates immediately as Hearts look to inject pace, directness and goals into their frontline during the crucial final months of the season.
