Italian side Fiorentina completed the signing of Ghanaian defender Tariq Lamptey from Brighton and Hove Albion on summer transfer deadline day, ending a five-and-a-half year spell at the Seagulls.

Lamptey had joined Brighton in January 2020 from another English team, Chelsea, where he struggled to break into the first team as an academy graduate.

Fiorentina paid a fee of about £6 million including add-ons to secure the services of the 25-year-old from the English side, who was keen on the move having seen his playing minutes reduced due to competition in recent seasons.

The defender, who switched allegiances to Ghana in 2022 despite making previous appearances for England at youth level, penned a three-year deal that will keep him at La Viola until the summer of 2028.

His versatility is a major asset for Fiorentina, as he is equally comfortable operating at right-back and can also step into the midfield when required.

From England’s South coast to Florence

Tariq Lamptey joined Brighton and Hove Albion in 2020, where he rose to prominence, becoming a key part of the Seagulls squad.

He arrived at Fiorentina with many expectations, but fans will have to wait to see his full potential after the defender sustained a knee injury in his second game for the club, ruling him out of action for up to six months.
