Pierre Ekwah of Ghanaian and Cameroonian descent has completed a return to English football after Watford confirmed the midfielder’s arrival on loan until the end of the season, with an option to make the move permanent.

The 24-year-old joins the Championship side following a prolonged dispute with AS Saint-Étienne, which had kept him out of competitive action for the past six months.

Saint-Étienne triggered a €6 million purchase clause last summer after Ekwah impressed during an initial loan spell from Sunderland. However, despite the investment, the French-Cameroonian did not feature in a single official match this season.

The midfielder was training alone and excluded from the first-team squad amid strained relations with the club’s hierarchy. The situation stemmed from disagreements over the terms of his permanent contract following Saint-Étienne’s relegation to Ligue 2.

Several clubs, including Levante and other Championship sides, monitored Ekwah’s availability, but Watford ultimately secured his signature. He will now look to relaunch his career in England, with his market value currently estimated at around €3 million.
