Promising Gambian goalkeeper Muhammed Gassama has taken a major step in his football career after signing his first professional contract with United Arab Emirates side Baniyas Sports & Cultural Club from Hawks FC, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.

The long-term deal comes following a successful trial period that impressed the technical team of the Abu Dhabi-based outfit.

Baniyas Club competes in the UAE Pro League, the top tier of Emirati football, and is based in Al-Samakha in the Baniyas area of Abu Dhabi. The move represents a significant breakthrough for the young shot-stopper, who now joins one of the most competitive leagues in the Gulf region.

Gassama, who developed at Hawks FC, follows in the footsteps of his father, Eliman Gassama, popularly known as “Largeh.” The elder Gassama was a respected goalkeeper who featured for Hawks FC, Augustinians, and Young Africans during his playing days, earning admiration for his commanding presence between the posts.

Interestingly, Muhammed bears a striking physical resemblance not only to his father but also to former Djurgården and Gambian international goalkeeper Pa Dembo Touray. His towering frame and distinctive bow-legs have drawn comparisons to the Scorpions legend, who remains one of The Gambia’s most iconic football figures.

Sources close to the young goalkeeper say he is fully focused on adapting to his new environment and making the most of the opportunity.

“The young goalkeeper is obviously looking forward to developing in his new environment and the ultimate aim of representing the Scorpions like Pa Dembo,” a source close to him revealed.

With his move to the UAE Pro League, Muhammed Gassama joins the growing list of Gambian talents seeking to make their mark abroad. His progression will be closely monitored by football enthusiasts back home, who will hope that the young custodian can emulate the achievements of his predecessors and one day don the national colours of The Gambia.
