Despite initially reaching a verbal agreement on a transfer, Ugandan youngster Hakim Mutebi‘s move to Switzerland topflight outfit FC Luzern has been called off by the club, Footy-Africa sources have exclusively learned.

Mutebi, who is a free agent, had been poised to join Luzern this week on a four-year contract, but it has shockingly been aborted. This comes after the club’s head coach Mario Frick told the Technical Director Stefan Marini that he wouldn’t need the player’s services.

Mutebi’s representatives Prosper Sports Agency has since been informed of the decision by the club. A source at the agency has expressed their disappointment, but also disclosed that the search for the next home for the 19-year-old is on.

“It’s disappointing that a club of Luzern’s capacity conducts business in this kind of way. We had agreed to terms, but we were yesterday told that the head coach had called off the deal. Our next course or action is to look for a worthy home for Hakim (Mutebi). He’s a huge talent and deserves to play for a team that understands his value,” the source told Footy-Africa in an exclusive interview.

Despite being a teenager, Mutebi is a Uganda Premier League champion with record holders SC Villa (2023/24). He is also a CECAFA U18 champion with Uganda which they clinched in 2023. At the tournament, he was also named the Most Valuable Player.

He has also previously played for Uganda’s prestigious secondary school, St Mary’s School Kitende, where he was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2023 East African Schools Championships. Notably, Mutebi also boasts a bronze medal from the 2022 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, the attacking midfielder, who can also operate as a forward, has already earned three appearances for the Uganda National Senior team, the Cranes, scoring one and as many assists during the FUFA Super 8 held in September last year.
