FC Winterthur have strengthened their midfield ranks with the arrival of Ghanaian talent Emmanuel Essiam, who joins on a long-term loan arrangement from FC Basel.
The 22-year-old heads to Winterthur on a season-long deal that keeps him at the club until the summer of 2027, offering both continuity and strategic depth to the Swiss Super League outfit.
A Ghana U-23 international, Essiam is widely regarded for his mobility, work rate, and tactical intelligence in central areas. His ability to operate as both a holding midfielder and a box-to-box presence provides Winterthur with valuable flexibility as they reshape their squad for the coming campaigns.
Essiam’s journey in Swiss football began in early 2022 when he transitioned from the Ghana Premier League to Basel. Since then, he has accumulated more than 40 appearances across the Swiss Super League, Challenge League, and Swiss Cup.
His development path has included temporary spells with Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy and FC Aarau, experiences that broadened his exposure within the Swiss system.

Injuries briefly stalled his momentum, prompting a move to Royal Francs Borains in Belgium’s second tier, where he focused on regaining rhythm and match sharpness.
Following structural changes at Basel, Essiam returned to his parent club, where he remains under contract until 2028.
Now, the former 2021 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations winner embarks on what could be a defining phase of his European career.
At Winterthur, he is expected to assume a central role in midfield, offering composure in possession, bite in defensive transitions, and an added layer of creativity as he settles into his new surroundings.
For both player and club, the agreement signals ambition: Winterthur secure a technically refined and internationally experienced midfielder, while Essiam gains a platform to reassert himself at the highest level of Swiss football.
