Czech top-flight side SK Sigma Olomouc have completed the signing of highly rated Nigerian youngster Samuel Aibe, beating off interest from other suitors to secure the defender’s signature, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.
The 18-year-old left-back joins the Czech club from Nigerian outfit Mahanaim FC shortly after celebrating his 18th birthday, marking a significant step in his budding career.
Aibe was first spotted by Mahanaim scouts in Kaduna, north-west Nigeria, three years ago and has since developed steadily within the club’s system. His rapid progress, athletic profile and attacking instincts from defence reportedly attracted interest from multiple overseas clubs, but Sigma Olomouc ultimately won the race for his signature.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, the Director of Communications at Mahanaim FC, Olaoluwa Aro, expressed confidence that the young defender has the qualities required to succeed in European football.
“Samuel is a calm and level-headed kid who I believe has everything it takes to make it big in Europe,” Aro said. “Yes, about two clubs were interested in signing him, but we chose Sigma because of the kind of development programmes they have for young players in his age bracket.”
“More importantly, we already have a strong and productive relationship with the club. As you know, the senior brother to all Mahanaim players is already there, Abubakar Ghali, so this move felt like the right decision for us. We first scouted Samuel in Kaduna State around three years ago and he has been with us ever since as one of our homegrown players.”
Aibe is regarded as a versatile defender whose natural position is at left-back but who can also operate effectively as a left winger thanks to his pace and attacking awareness.
“He is a modern footballer,” Aro added. “I believe he will become one of the biggest talents to come out of Mahanaim and, in time, a key player for Nigeria.”
At Sigma Olomouc, Aibe will also link up with former Nigeria U20 winger Ahmad Ghali as he begins a new chapter in the Czech Republic.
