Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has expressed pleasure in seeing his compatriots contribute immensely to Trabzonspor’s 2-1 win over league leaders Galatasaray in the Turkish Super League on Saturday.
The Nigerian trio of Chibuike Nwaiwu, Anthony Nwakaeme, and league top scorer Paul Onuachu all started the game for Trabzonspor — the first time three Nigerians have started together for the club.
Galatasaray were missing their talisman Victor Osimhen due to injury as the chase for the Turkish title heats up.
Trabzonspor went ahead early in the game through a powerful header from Onuachu in the third minute, but just after the break, Wilfried Singo equalised for the league leaders.
Veteran striker Anthony Nwakaeme then swung in a free-kick which his Nigerian compatriot Chibuike Nwaiwu met with a powerful header for the winner in the 62nd minute.
Onazi, who played at Trabzonspor with Anthony Nwakaeme, was over the moon as his former team secured a win over the Turkish giants, with his compatriots contributing to all the goals scored by the club.
“I followed the game here in America and I was excited seeing all three Nigerians start the game and make goal contributions,” Onazi exclusively told Footy-Africa.
“I am not sure there is any other time three Nigerians started for any Turkish side or were involved in all the goals in a win. I doubt it has happened before. I am happy for Tony (Nwakaeme). We played together at Trabzon when I was there, and it is good to see him still pulling the strings there.”

“Paul (Onuachu) has been very impressive this season, and I think he will win the top scorer’s award, while the young defender, Nwaiwu, is just magnificent, honestly. I think he has about three goals as a defender, even though he joined them not too long ago. I am very happy for them and the win. I wish them all the best this season,” he concluded.
With the win over Galatasaray, Trabzonspor are now second in the league standings with 63 points from 28 games, even though they have played a game more than the top six clubs on the table.
