Ademola Lookman’s outstanding performances in this season’s UEFA Champions League have earned glowing praise from former Nigeria international Kelechi Okoye.

Lookman proved to be the difference-maker as Atletico Madrid edged past Barcelona with a 2–1 victory in their quarter-final clash, sealing progression in dramatic fashion.

Having secured a 2–0 advantage in the first leg, Atletico were put under immediate pressure in the return fixture. Barcelona surged ahead within the opening half-hour through goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres, threatening a remarkable comeback.

With momentum firmly on Barcelona’s side, it appeared the Spanish giants could overturn the deficit. However, Lookman rose to the occasion, scoring a crucial goal to halt the comeback and restore Atletico’s control of the tie. His strike ensured a 2–1 result on the night and a 3–2 aggregate victory, sending Diego Simeone’s men into the semi-finals.

Okoye, a former winger like Lookman, was full of admiration for the 26-year-old, describing him as a player built for big moments and a key asset for Nigeria.

“I was very happy when Lookman scored for Atletico,” Okoye told Footy-Africa. “Even though I’m not a big fan of the club, seeing a Nigerian score in such a huge quarter-final match was truly refreshing. It was always going to be difficult for Atletico, especially after Barcelona scored early. At one point, I thought Barca might run away with it. But then Lookman stepped up. His goal changed everything and helped Atletico hold on and reach the semi-finals.”

Okoye also highlighted Lookman’s continued rise over the past few years, pointing to his consistency on the biggest stages.

“Lookman has really come into his own in the last two to three years. He’s a player for big occasions. I remember the hat-trick he scored in the Europa League final, and now this. I’m genuinely happy for him,” he added.

Lawal: Simeone can take Lookman to Mbappé level

The former international also admitted he initially had doubts about Lookman’s move from Atalanta to Atletico Madrid, given Diego Simeone’s traditionally defensive approach:

“One thing that pleases me is how well his move to Atletico has worked out. I was sceptical at first because Simeone isn’t known for attacking football. But Lookman has adapted brilliantly. He’s been integrated into the team and, over the past few weeks, he’s been one of their standout players. As a Nigerian and a winger myself, that makes me proud.”

Atletico Madrid will now face Arsenal in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after the Premier League side edged Sporting Lisbon 1–0 on aggregate to reach their second consecutive semi-final in the competition.
