French club Olympique Lyonnais have rewarded academy prospect Melvyn Otobo of Nigerian descent with his first professional contract, securing the defender’s future at the club until June 2028.
The agreement marks another milestone in Lyon’s renowned youth development programme, with Otobo becoming the latest academy graduate to earn professional status after progressing through the club’s ranks.
The 18-year-old centre-back joined Lyon in 2020 and enjoyed a productive 2025-26 campaign, featuring regularly for the club’s Under-19 side while also gaining experience with the reserve team in France’s National 3 division. Across both levels, he made 23 appearances, including 10 outings in National 3, underlining his growing importance within the club’s development pathway.
Otobo is the third player from Lyon’s highly regarded 2008 age group to sign a professional deal, following in the footsteps of academy teammates Rémi Himbert and Angel Garcia.

The move reflects Lyon’s continued commitment to promoting young talent from within, a philosophy that has previously produced stars such as Karim Benzema, Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso.
Primarily a central defender, Otobo is regarded as one of the promising prospects emerging from Lyon’s academy system. His progression into National 3 football during the past season provided an important step in his development, allowing him to gain experience against senior opposition while continuing to feature at youth level.
With his long-term future now secured, the teenager will aim to continue his rise through the ranks and push for opportunities closer to Lyon’s first-team squad in the coming seasons.
The contract represents a significant vote of confidence from the seven-time French champions, who view Otobo as part of the next generation of academy talent capable of making an impact at the club.
