Africa’s challenge at the 2026 FIFA World Cup received a significant lift on Monday as Ivory Coast claimed the continent’s first victory of the tournament, defeating Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Amad Diallo.
For much of the contest at Lincoln Financial Field, the Group E encounter appeared destined to end without a goal. Ecuador dominated large stretches of the game and repeatedly threatened to break the deadlock, only to be denied by a combination of wasteful finishing and stubborn Ivorian defending.
The South Americans struck the woodwork twice during an entertaining first half and created a host of dangerous openings, but failed to capitalise on their superiority. Their inability to convert chances ultimately proved costly.
The Elephants, meanwhile, displayed the grit and resilience that carried them to continental glory in recent years. Despite spending long periods under pressure, they remained organised defensively and gradually grew into the match as it progressed.
Just when a share of the spoils looked inevitable, Amad Diallo delivered the decisive moment. Deep into the 90th minute, the winger produced a clinical finish to stun Ecuador and send the Ivorian bench and supporters into celebration.

The dramatic winner secured a priceless three points for the African champions and instantly transformed the complexion of Group E.
The victory is particularly significant as it represents the first win by an African nation at the expanded 48-team World Cup, offering an early statement that the continent’s representatives are capable of making a strong impact on football’s biggest stage.
Ivory Coast now sit level on three points with Germany, who earlier produced one of the performances of the opening round by dismantling Curacao 7-1 in the other Group E fixture.
With Africa represented by a record ten nations at this year’s tournament, expectations are high across the continent. Ivory Coast have become the first side to deliver a victory, setting an encouraging tone for the remaining African contenders.
While South Africa, Morocco, Ivory Coast and Tunisia have already begun their World Cup journeys, attention now turns to Ghana, Egypt, Algeria, DR Congo and Cabo Verde, who are yet to launch their campaigns and will be hoping to build on the momentum generated by the Elephants’ memorable triumph.
