Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah is keen on joining German Bundesliga side FC Köln as interest in his services continues to grow following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Footy-Africa can exclusively report.
A source close to the player has told Footy-Africa that the 27-year-old left-back favours a move to Köln, although the final decision will depend on the financial package presented by the interested clubs.
Köln are among several teams pursuing the Ghana international, with fellow German side Schalke 04 and Turkish Super Lig newcomers Çorum FK also in the race for his signature.
The former AJ Auxerre defender became a free agent after his contract with the French club expired on June 30, making him one of the most sought-after left-backs on the market this summer.
UAE clubs show interest in Ghana’s Gideon Mensah as free-agent move beckons
Köln are understood to have identified Mensah as a priority target following the departure of Kristoffer Lund, while Schalke and Çorum FK intensified their interest after the defender’s impressive performances for Ghana at the World Cup.
Despite attracting attention from clubs in the UAE Pro League, Mensah is said to prefer remaining in Europe as he considers the next step in his career.
The Ghana international was one of the Black Stars’ standout performers at the World Cup, playing every minute of the team’s campaign as Ghana reached the Round of 32 before bowing out to Colombia.
Mensah also enjoyed a solid final season with Auxerre, making 30 Ligue 1 appearances and helping the club secure its top-flight status.
