Iraqi Premier League side Zakho SC have stepped up efforts to lure Vipers SC star Abdul-Karim Watambala away from St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, during the ongoing transfer window, sources have revealed to Footy-Africa.
The highly-rated attacking midfielder has emerged as one of the hottest properties on the market following another outstanding campaign, attracting firm interest from the Iraqi club.
Footy-Africa understands that Zakho are not alone in the chase, with another top-flight side from Iraq also monitoring the Uganda international’s situation.
Watambala still has one year remaining on his contract with the Uganda Premier League champions, placing Vipers in a strong negotiating position. The Venoms, however, are reluctant to sanction the departure of one of their most influential performers, particularly with the club preparing for a return to the CAF Champions League.
The 25-year-old was instrumental in Vipers’ title-winning 2025/26 campaign, finishing the league season with 12 goals (and six assists), just two behind Golden Boot winner Ivan Ahimbisibwe. His remarkable consistency, creativity and decisive contributions earned him the Uganda Premier League’s Most Valuable Player award.
A product of St Mary’s Secondary School, Kitende, Watambala graduated into the Vipers senior team in 2019 and has since developed into one of the club’s most decorated modern-day players.
During his seven-year spell with the Venoms, he has helped the club capture five Uganda Premier League crowns and three Uganda Cup titles, cementing his status as a key figure in the club’s recent era of dominance.
Zakho SC, based in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, are seeking to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign. Founded in 1987, the club plays its home matches at the 20,000-capacity Zakho International Stadium.
The Iraqi outfit endured a modest 2025/26 Iraq Stars League season, finishing ninth after collecting 53 points from 38 matches, and are now looking to reinforce their squad with proven quality as they aim for a stronger campaign.
