Uganda Cranes forward Denis Omedi is on the verge of completing a move to Kenyan Premier League heavyweights AFC Leopards, with advanced negotiations underway between the two parties, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.
The 32-year-old is expected to sign a two-year contract with the 13-time Kenyan champions, who have identified the experienced attacker as a key addition ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Talks have progressed positively in recent days, with only the final details separating Omedi from a move to Nairobi.
Should the deal go through, it will bring an end to Omedi’s stint with Rwandan champions APR FC, whom he joined in January 2025 after a sensational spell at Kitara FC. He signed alongside fellow Ugandan Hakim Kiwanuka as APR strengthened their squad for domestic and continental ambitions.
Although APR lifted silverware during his time in Kigali, Omedi found regular starts difficult to come by and has been eager to secure a move that guarantees consistent playing time as he looks to cement his place in the Uganda Cranes setup ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Omedi’s rise to prominence has been one of Ugandan football’s most remarkable stories. After beginning his career with Booma FC in Masindi, he exploded onto the scene at Kitara FC, scoring 15 Uganda Premier League goals during the 2023/24 season and spearheading the Royals to a historic Stanbic Uganda Cup triumph. His performances also earned him the Real Stars Sports Monthly Award for February 2024.
His profile reached global heights later that year thanks to an extraordinary rabona strike against KCCA FC in the FUFA Super 8. The spectacular effort earned nominations for both the FIFA Puskás Award and the CAF Goal of the Year Award, making him one of the few East African players to receive recognition on football’s biggest individual stages. Omedi eventually finished third in the FIFA Puskás Award voting, behind Alejandro Garnacho and Yassine Benzia, further enhancing his reputation across the continent.
On the international stage, Omedi has become a key figure for the Uganda Cranes. He announced himself with a memorable goal in Uganda’s 2-2 AFCON qualifying draw against South Africa before adding further goals during the qualification campaign and at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, establishing himself as one of the country’s most dependable attacking options.
His performances have attracted interest from several clubs over the past two years, including sides in Spain, Egypt, South Africa and within the CECAFA region. Kenyan giants AFC Leopards now appear to have won the race, with the club keen to add proven quality and experience as they chase domestic honours.
Unless there is a late twist in negotiations, Omedi is expected to become the latest Ugandan star to ply his trade in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, opening a new chapter in a career already decorated with domestic success, international recognition and one of the most iconic goals in Ugandan football history.
