Super Eagles defender Isaac James in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa has stated that playing at the Africa Cup of Nations is one of his biggest ambitions after his first call-up to the Nigeria national team.
“I was surprised and happy when I got the call-up for Nigeria, as it has always been my dream to play for the Super Eagles,” James said. “Getting to camp and seeing all the players gave me great joy. I am happy to be part of this setup and hopefully I will get the opportunity to make my debut.”
“Not every footballer gets the chance to play for his country, so to be picked is a great privilege. When I came to camp, I was given a warm reception and it was really good.”
Asked how he would feel about a debut, James said he would accept whatever the coach decides and support the team either way.
“We are a team. It does not matter who starts because we all have one thing in common, and that is to do well for Nigeria, whether you are on the pitch or on the bench. I will be pleased to play, but supporting the team and achieving success together is the most important thing for me.”

James expects a hard game in Bissau against Guinea-Bissau and says the Super Eagles must go there ready to fight for all three points.
“The game against Guinea-Bissau will be very tough, as we all know there are no easy games in these kinds of qualifiers. We have to be ready for them and give our best to get the three points. One of my dreams is to play at the FIFA World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations and in the Champions League. So, this game against Guinea-Bissau is another opportunity to take a step towards achieving those dreams, and I hope it happens.”
The 22-year-old, who plays for Portuguese side Alverca, was invited by head coach Eric Chelle for the current international window. He is one of 13 new players named for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, and for next month’s friendly against Russia.
James has been one of Nigeria’s best performers in Europe this season, with seven appearances and two assists, and that form put him on the Super Eagles’ radar.
