Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson, in an interview with Footy-Africa, has expressed belief that the Black Stars’ lack of chemistry was evident in their 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Johnson said Ghana lacked the unity and cohesion needed to protect their two-goal advantage after taking control of the game in the first half.
“There was no chemistry in the team. You could see that the players were not fighting for each other, and that made the defeat very disappointing,” Johnson told Footy-Africa.
Ernest Nuamah and Felix Ohene Afena-Gyan put Ghana 2-0 ahead, but The Gambia fought back through Mohammed Badamosi and Ebrima Colley to level before the break.
Badamosi completed the turnaround in the 71st minute before Colley scored again late in the game to seal a 4-2 victory for the visitors.
Johnson acknowledged the number of new players brought into the squad following several withdrawals but said Ghana must develop better understanding and togetherness.
“You can have new players, but when they come into the national team, they have to understand that they are playing for Ghana. There has to be unity and understanding between them,” he added.
The former defender also described the result as disappointing and called for improvement from the Black Stars as they prepare for their next qualifiers.
Ghana are now bottom of Group C without a point from their opening two matches and will face Somalia in a double-header in November.
