Gambian young talent Lamin Keita signed a three-year contract with German Bundesliga club St. Pauli. His story is one of resilience, determination, and dreams pursued against the odds. The 15-year old talked exclusively to Footy-Africa to share this thoughts on the big move and future ahead.

Lamin is a testament to the power of hope and hard work. But his journey to the top has not been easy, as he made his way from the coast of The Gambia through perilous routes and eventually found a new home in Europe, where he is now on the cusp of a bright footballing future.

From Gambia to Europe

At just 12 years old, Keita made a life-changing decision to leave Gambia and embark on a journey to Europe, seeking a better future and the opportunity to follow his dream of playing football at the highest level, he told Footy-Africa in the exclusive interview.

The young footballer’s trek began with an incredibly dangerous crossing from Gambia to Libya, a perilous route known for its unpredictability and risk. From there, Keita embarked on the next stage of his journey — a dangerous sea crossing to Italy, a migration route that has been the subject of much attention due to the high number of lives lost in the Mediterranean.

“I crossed the sea to Italy and stayed there for one year before moving on to Germany,” Keita recalls in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa, remembering the emotional toll of the journey.

For many young migrants, the trek through Libya and across the Mediterranean Sea can feel like a gamble with life. But Keita’s passion for football and his dream of one day playing for a top European club kept him going, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Long awaited call

After reaching Italy, Keita found himself in a new environment, far from home but driven by the desire to carve out a future for himself. He soon moved to Germany, where he began playing football for FC Teutonia 05, a club where he honed his skills and caught the attention of scouts. It was here, in the competitive environment of German football, that Keita’s talent began to shine through.

His perseverance and dedication to his craft didn’t go unnoticed, and it wasn’t long before scouts from St. Pauli, a club with a strong tradition in German football, took notice of him. In a moment that must have felt like the culmination of years of struggle, Keita received the call he had longed for — a chance to sign with St. Pauli.

“I was very excited to sign this contract because it is my dream to play in a big club like St. Pauli,” Keita says with pride.

For a young player who had made such a difficult journey to reach this point, it was the realisation of a dream that had fuelled his every step along the way.

Keita’s path forward, however, is just beginning. While his contract with St. Pauli is a significant milestone, the teenager will first train with the U19 team, where he will continue to develop his game under the guidance of experienced coaches. His focus now is to continue improving, learning, and making his mark at the youth level, with the ultimate goal of breaking into the first team.

Key to success

When asked about the secret to his success, Keita credits his unwavering belief in himself, his commitment to hard work, and his willingness to listen to his coaches.

“I can say it is my hard work and believing in myself that brought me here,” he reflects. These values have not only been key to his progress but have also helped him maintain a sense of optimism and determination through the toughest of times.

Keita’s ambitions don’t stop at playing for the youth team; he has his sights set on a future with St. Pauli’s senior squad.

“I have a dream to play for the first team of St. Pauli,” he says with confidence.

It’s a goal that feels entirely possible for a player who has already overcome so much to get to where he is today.
