Germany-born Ghanaian centre-back Joel Agyekum will spend the 2025/26 season with the third-division club FC Viktoria Köln on loan, according to the official announcement.

All parties agreed on the deal on Monday before summer transfer deadline.

“Joel has developed positively in recent months and is an integral part of our Bundesliga team. We have underscored this not only recently with the contract extension. However, in order for him to continue on this path, he needs regular playing time at the highest possible level – which is why this loan makes a lot of sense for all parties,” sporting director Claus Costa explained.

The 20-year-old defender expressed belief that this move will help him to make a new step on the professional level in European football

“What I’ve experienced here at HSV over the past few months is still hard to comprehend. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, however, I’m now looking forward to the challenge at Viktoria Köln in the 3. Liga, where I personally want to take the next step,” Agyekum stated.

Agyekum, who became the 520th HSV player to appear in league matches since the Bundesliga was founded and signed his first professional contract with the club at the end of April, has been a part of the team’s structure since 2017.

During this time, Agyekum progressed through the youth teams, sometimes leading them onto the pitch as a captain. With this experience, the left-footer also recommended himself to the German Football Association (DFB) and has already played for the U18 team.
