Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa has urged Nigerians to put criticism aside and get behind the team as they prepare for a crunch World Cup Qualifier clash with South Africa in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.
Nigeria may have picked up a much-needed 1-0 win over Rwanda in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, but the performance has left many fans divided. New Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare struck in the 51st minute to register his second international goal and hand the Super Eagles only their second victory in seven qualifying matches.

Despite the three points, the display was far from convincing, with frustrated supporters voicing their concerns online.
“I want to implore Nigerians to get behind the team because they need them now more than ever as we get into this important period of the qualifiers,” Onazi exclusively told Footy-Africa.
“I agree the performance was not the best because Nigerians love beautiful football, but the most important thing is the three points which they were able to get. It was a very hard game because the Rwandans were very physical and came with a defensive game plan, but thankfully, we were able to score,” he added.

Onazi, who featured in the 2014 FIFA World Cup for Nigeria and was part of the AFCON 2013-winning side, acknowledged that the team will sorely miss Victor Osimhen, who has been ruled out through injury. Still, he believes the other forwards in the squad are capable of stepping up.
“It is sad and a shame that Osimhen, who is a very important figure in the team, will be missing, but I am sure he will be rooting for the team during the game,” he said.
“This is also a chance for the others to show they can shoulder the responsibilities if Osimhen is not there. I am happy Tolu (Arokodare) scored, which will give him confidence. I am sure whoever starts will do their best to get the goals for Nigeria. Furthermore, I agree Osimhen will be missed, but I am positive others will cover up for the loss, and I pray we get a win there in South Africa. It is possible,” Onazi concluded.
Nigeria currently sits third in Group C of the CAF World Cup qualifiers and know that Tuesday’s game in South Africa could prove decisive in their quest for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
