Following his decision not to continue with Uganda Premier League record holders SC Villa, Patrick Kakande is on the verge of securing a new home, with Vipers SC leading the race to sign him, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.

The playmaker turned down a sign-on fee of €4,600 (about 18 million Ugandan shillings) from Villa, which included a proposed two-year contract extension, as he sought greener pastures. He was close to joining Belgium’s Standard Liège, but the move fell through after he was denied a visa to complete his medical tests.

Instead, current Ugandan champions Vipers SC appear to have won the race for the talented, fleet-footed attacking midfielder.

A source at Prosper Sports Agency, Kakande’s representatives, disclosed that the player has been in direct contact with Vipers president Lawrence Mulindwa, and a verbal agreement has been reached.

The 21-year-old is set to receive a lucrative sign-on fee of €35,900 (about 150 million shillings) and a monthly salary of €3,600 (about 15 million shillings). He will sign a three-year contract once his deal with SC Villa officially expires on June 30.

“He (Jonah) will join Vipers after a verbal agreement with their president, Lawrence Mulindwa, and will sign a three-year contract with significant financial terms by local standards. The move to Standard Liège didn’t materialize due to a visa denial, but the transfer to Vipers is still a great opportunity, especially as they’ll compete in the CAF Champions League,” the source told Footy-Africa in an exclusive interview.

Kakande was named Most Valuable Player in the 2023/24 campaign, helping SC Villa to their record-extending 17th league title. He scored nine league goals and provided eight assists in 26 games. In the most recent season, he tallied nine goals and six assists in 28 appearances.

On the international stage, the versatile attacker has earned four caps for the Uganda Cranes, registering two assists. He has also represented Uganda at the U20 level.
