Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa expressed belief that Nigerians have every reason to be optimistic about the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following their impressive 4–0 victory over Benin that sealed a place in the playoffs.
Nigeria’s emphatic win in Uyo reignited hope among fans after what had been a turbulent qualification campaign. The result means the team now has a fighting chance to reach the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Onazi, who represented Nigeria at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups in Brazil and Russia respectively, said the team’s renewed energy and resilience have restored belief across the country.
“I believe the team will qualify because of recent events. There were a lot of doubts in the minds of Nigerians, but this has given us another chance at qualification,” the former Lazio midfielder said in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa.

“A lot went wrong at the start of the qualifiers, but now, with the passion and determination the team has shown, you can see they understand what it means to play at the World Cup. The players have shown commitment, and I believe that drive will take them through,” he added.
Looking ahead to the playoff clash with Gabon, Onazi urged the players to remain focused and disciplined, warning that the tie will be far from easy.
“It will not be an easy game because Gabon had an almost flawless qualification campaign with very good points,” Onazi noted.
“We must approach the match carefully. Football has evolved, and the Gabonese will be a tough side to face. I believe we can beat them, but the players must treat it like a World Cup or AFCON final.”

The experienced midfielder also called for unity and support from all stakeholders ahead of the crucial fixtures.
“Everyone, the players, the administrators, and even the fans must be on the same page. With that collective support, I’m sure the team will make Nigerians proud and qualify. We missed the last World Cup, and I don’t want us to miss another. If the players keep the same passion I saw against Benin, I have no doubt we’ll make it,” he added.
