Despite reports that Romanian giants CFR Cluj are interested in signing Nigerian international and versatile defender Kenneth Omeruo, there has not been any contact between the two parties, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.
Omeruo has been without a club since parting ways with Turkish side Kasimpasa in January this year. However, while he is keen on finding a new home, there has yet to be contact with any team, according to an exclusive source at ISC, the agency that represents him.
The source further added that while a move could be appealing to Omeruo—especially with CFR Cluj set to compete in the 2025/26 UEFA Europa Conference League—the player will only join a team if all his conditions are met, particularly regarding playing time.
“The reports are flying, but if I am to be honest, there is no contact at this point. A project like CFR Cluj’s, their ambitions, and the fact that they will play European football next season is something that appeals to him (Omeruo). We will wait to see if they make a formal bid, but there are no talks currently. He is not in a rush or desperate, so he will take his time to assess whatever is presented to him. As for now, we are working to get him what is best for him in this window, and we are optimistic,” the source exclusively told Footy-Africa.
In his most recent spell at Kasimpasa, the 31-year-old—whose Transfermarkt valuation is estimated at 1.20 million euros—made five appearances. He has also previously played for Alanyaspor in Turkey, Leganes in Spain, Chelsea U21 and Middlesbrough in England, as well as ADO Den Haag in the Netherlands.
Internationally, Omeruo made his debut for Nigeria at just 19, won the Africa Cup of Nations at 20, and has featured in several major tournaments including the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Most recently, he was part of the Super Eagles squad that finished as runners-up at the 2023 AFCON. Overall, he has earned 69 caps for the national team.
