Uganda’s football fairy tale continues to capture global attention as the Cubs storm into the knockout rounds of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, a remarkable achievement in their debut appearance on the grand stage.

The East African youngsters, guided by coach Brian Ssenyondo, have defied expectations and now prepare for an all-African clash against Senegal in the Round of 32, scheduled for Saturday, November 15. The eagerly anticipated encounter will decide who advances to the Round of 16, where either Germany or Burkina Faso awaits.

The draw for the knockout phase was held shortly after the group stage wrapped up on Tuesday evening, officially confirming Uganda’s next challenge.

Uganda’s path to this milestone has been anything but straightforward. The Cubs finished third in Group K with four points, level with their group rivals, and narrowly missed out on an automatic qualification spot. Yet their resilience and fighting spirit paid off as they advanced among the tournament’s best eight third-placed teams, ranking fourth behind North Korea, Egypt, and Paraguay.

A famous 1-0 victory over European heavyweights France turned out to be the spark that reignited Uganda’s campaign. That result, combined with their disciplined defensive displays, ensured that Ssenyondo’s side would continue their historic run.

Standing in their way now is a formidable Senegalese team that dominated Group C, collecting seven points out of a possible nine. The Lions Cubs of Teranga have showcased pace, flair, and clinical finishing, a combination that will surely test Uganda’s grit and tactical discipline.

For Uganda, however, belief is stronger than ever. From being first-timers to knockout contenders, the Cubs have already written a golden chapter in the country’s football history. And with the spirit and energy they’ve shown so far, few would dare to rule out another upset when the whistle blows in Doha on Saturday night.
