Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, has hailed the team’s performance after they sealed progress to the quarterfinals of the 2025 African Cup of Nations with an emphatic 4-0 win over Mozambique on Monday.

The Super Eagles had breezed through their Group C campaign with a 100% record, beating Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda on their way to finishing top of the group. They went into the Round of 16 clash against the Mambas and delivered a statement performance with the rout.

Ademola Lookman opened the scoring early in the first half with a neat finish, before Victor Osimhen added the next two goals either side of both halves. Akor Adams, back in the lineup after dropping to the bench against Uganda, completed the rout with a late strike.

Akor Adams sends heartfelt message after first AFCON goal

“It’s very important, we’re into the quarterfinals so it’s very important that we won today. We scored four goals today, it’s not always easy to score four goals at the AFCON tournament”, Onuachu exclusively told Footy-Africa after the win. “The team is doing great, the boys are happy and Nigerians are happy. We want to go into the semi. We are into the quarters and we want to go to the semis.”

The Trabzonspor striker has started only one match so far in Morocco and came on in the final four minutes of the victory over Mozambique.

However, he downplayed any negative feelings about his limited playing time, noting the high quality in the squad and acknowledging that the coach selects the players he feels are best.

“We have good strikers – Victor, Akor, myself, Cyriel (I’m sorry he’s injured), but I have think Nigeria have good strikers, even the ones that are not here. It depends on who the coach calls upon to play and I think they have to give their best. We are all good and it depends on who the coach prefers to start and we will all back them up”, Onuachu concluded.
