Atletico Madrid have joined a crowded field of admirers for Nigeria international Ademola Lookman, with Napoli and Galatasaray also weighing up moves for the Atalanta forward.

Lookman, 28, has reached a footballing maturity in Bergamo that has made him one of the most coveted attackers in Europe. After his historic hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final and being crowned African Footballer of the Year, the former Everton man is now valued at approximately €40m (£33.5m).

While Atalanta are under no immediate pressure to sell—with a contract running until 2027—there is a growing sense that the upcoming summer window could be the right time for all parties to strike a deal.

Simeone’s ideal profile

At the Metropolitano, Lookman is viewed as a priority reinforcement. Diego Simeone is said to be particularly enamoured by the Nigerian’s versatility and his tireless work rate off the ball—hallmarks of the Argentine’s tactical setup.

Atletico believe Lookman’s ability to unlock tight defences would offer a fresh dimension to their frontline, though they face stiff competition from two major rivals.

Napoli’s ‘sell-to-buy’ strategy

Napoli appear to be the most advanced in their pursuit. The Italian side have reportedly identified Lookman as the ideal spark to ignite their attack, but their progress hinges on a strict financial policy.

To fund a bid that meets Atalanta’s valuation, Napoli are prepared to offload two high-profile names:

  • Lorenzo Lucca: The towering striker is valued at €25m and has attracted interest from the likes of Porto and Benfica.
  • Noa Lang: The Dutch winger, who joined only recently, could also be sacrificed for a similar €25m fee to balance the books.

Galatasaray prepare January moves both for Onyedika and Lookman

Turkish interest gathers pace

The race is further complicated by interest from Turkey. While Galatasaray have long been linked with the forward, city rivals Fenerbahçe have reportedly made the first move this January.

Reports suggest Fenerbahçe are considering a loan deal with an obligation to buy for €37m, potentially gazumping both Atletico and Napoli before the winter window closes.

With Lookman currently away on international duty, his future looks set to be the defining saga of the next two transfer windows.
