Another Nigerian footballer is set to continue his career in Eastern Europe, with a move to Ukraine expected to be completed in the coming days. This follows the recent switches of Francis Momoh and Prosper Obah to the country.
Sources close to Footy-Africa have confirmed that former Nigeria U-20 midfielder Adam Yakubu has agreed personal terms with Ukrainian side FC LNZ Cherkasy.
Yakubu, who previously featured for Plateau United and Akwa United in the Nigeria Premier Football League, will make the move from Czech club AS Trenčín, where he has impressed since arriving earlier this year.
The 20-year-old midfielder is managed by Ibrahim Musa, popularly known as “Coach Bros,” and is a product of the renowned Golden Boy Soccer Academy (GBS) in Jos, North Central Nigeria, a breeding ground for young Nigerian talents.
Since joining Trenčín, Yakubu has enjoyed a strong run of form and, alongside fellow Nigerian Suleiman Sani, has drawn attention with a series of composed and energetic performances in midfield. His displays sparked interest from several European clubs, including sides in Belgium.
Belgian outfit KAA Gent, who have a working relationship with AS Trenčín, were understood to be monitoring the midfielder closely. However, sources indicate that the proposal from Ukraine was considered the best option for his development at this stage of his career.
“Yakubu had a few clubs coming in for him, including two clubs from Belgium and two from Ukraine,” a source told Footy-Africa exclusively. “But at the end of the day, LNZ were the team the management felt was best suited for him to continue his career. He is a hardworking player, and I am not surprised by how far he has gone so far. Shakhtar Donetsk were also interested.”
“For me, he is one of the best central midfielders in the Czech Republic. He can also play as a defensive midfielder. I hope he continues to make us proud with his performances,” the source added.
Adams has featured in 17 matches for AS Trenčín this season. While he has yet to register a goal or an assist, his all-round contribution, discipline, and tactical awareness have made him a standout performer.
