Asante Kotoko have identified club icon Maxwell Konadu as their preferred option to take over as the club’s next permanent head coach, Footy-Africa understands.
The Porcupine Warriors are currently without a substantive manager following the resignation of Abdul Karim Zito ahead of last weekend’s Super Clash against arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak.
Assistant coach Prince Owusu stepped in to lead the team on an interim basis for the fixture, but Kotoko suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at the Baba Yara Stadium.
In the aftermath of that setback, Kotoko’s hierarchy moved swiftly to begin the search for a new manager and have since opened discussions with Konadu as they look to make a quick appointment ahead of the remaining matches of the league campaign.
Earlier speculation suggested that former Hearts of Oak coach Samuel Boadu was in contention for the role.
However, sources indicate that sections of the fan base and some figures within the club were not keen on that possibility due to remarks he reportedly made about Kotoko during his time with their bitter rivals.
With that option now seemingly off the table, Konadu, who boasts a strong connection with the club both as a former player and coach, has emerged as the leading candidate.
His potential return is expected to receive strong backing from supporters as Kotoko look to stabilise their season and push for a strong finish in the Ghana Premier League.
