Nigeria’s journey at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile came to an acrimonious end after the Flying Eagles were thrashed 4–0 by Argentina in the Round of 16.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu had earlier expressed confidence that his team could replicate Nigeria’s famous 2–0 victory over the South Americans at the previous edition in 2023.
Unfortunately, the Flying Eagles struggled to find rhythm throughout the encounter as Argentina dominated the game, cruising to a comfortable win and a place in the quarter-finals.
Despite the heavy defeat, a few Nigerian players showed flashes of promise, hinting at a bright future for the team.
In this feature, Footy-Africa’s Nigerian football expert Andrew Randa highlights four standout Flying Eagles players from the tournament, with expert insights from former Nigeria U-17 national team coach Olanrewaju Daniel.
Sani Suleiman (AS Trencin)
Probably Nigeria’s brightest attacking prospect in the competition, Sani Suleiman impressed with his incisive runs and energy.
He started the first game from the bench but was later restored to the starting lineup, where he got on the ball more frequently.

Suleiman also registered an assist and could have had more if his teammates had been more clinical.
Daniel: “I like him a lot because anytime he gets on the ball, he makes something happen for Nigeria.
It is unfortunate he was suspended for the Round of 16 game against Argentina. Maybe if he had played, we could have done better in attack.
Despite that, he impressed me a lot, and I hope to see him in the Super Eagles very soon.”
Ahmed Akinyele (Remo Stars)
The centre-back started the first game and looked assured in defence, helping Nigeria stay organised at the back, especially in the opener against Norway.
Though Ahmed Akinyele looked shaky at times, his confidence, distribution, and aerial clearances stood out.
Akinyele showed he has the qualities to develop into a top defender.
Daniel: “I have followed Ahmed (Akinyele) for some time now, and I must say he’s one of the best young defenders we have in Nigeria.
He was arguably our best defender at the tournament, despite our exit in the Round of 16.
I believe he is ready to take his game to Europe.”

Daniel Bameyi (ND Primorje Ajdovščina)
Captain of the side, Daniel Bameyi led from the back and remained composed even though, like the rest of the team, he had a day to forget against Argentina.
He scored two crucial penalties against Saudi Arabia and Colombia that earned Nigeria a place in the Round of 16.
Now, he will look forward to kick-starting his career in Slovenia after the World Cup.
Daniel: “A lot has been said about him, but we can’t deny he has really improved in many ways.
Like the others, he struggled against Argentina, but he was solid in most games.
I’m looking forward to seeing how he develops, and I believe his move to Slovenia will help him grow.”

Odinaka Okoro (Sporting Lagos)
The left-back was one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers, combining defensive discipline with attacking intent. Odinaka Okoro’s energy and running down the flank was a joy to behold
He also tirelessly covered the flanks and delivered several dangerous crosses that went unconverted.
Daniel: “I love his energy and drive, especially in the first two games against Norway and Saudi Arabia, and he was also impressive against Colombia.
I first noticed him at the WAFU B tournament, and he didn’t disappoint at the World Cup.
If he continues like this, Nigeria’s left-back position will be secure for years to come.”
