Former Nigeria U-16 international Alex John, popularly known as “Pankere”, has taken a major step in his career after signing his first professional contract with Hungarian top-flight side Nyíregyháza Spartacus FC.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa after completing his move, John expressed his gratitude to everyone who has supported his journey.
“I’m extremely happy and thankful for this chance. Signing my first professional contract is incredibly meaningful for me and my family,” John told Footy-Africa. “It is the dream of every player, especially young players in Nigeria, to play in Europe, and I am happy that my own dream has come true.”
“The next step is for me to show that I can compete at a higher level, and that is what I am determined to do. I believe I can contribute a lot to my new team, and I want to repay the faith they have shown in me.”
The talented forward also paid tribute to the people who played an important role in his development at 36 Lion FC, reserving special praise for club owner and mentor Cem Sagar.
“I want to extend my gratitude to the 36 Lion family, Mr. Cem Sagar, the coaches and all my teammates who showed me love back home in Nigeria. They believed in me and motivated me to reach this milestone,” he added.
Known as “Pankere”, John earned his nickname because of his agile and unpredictable style of play, which often makes life difficult for defenders and provides excitement for supporters.
His performances at the Supremacy Cup reportedly attracted the attention of Nyíregyháza Spartacus, with the Hungarian club impressed by his pace, directness and fearless approach in attacking situations.
The move will now give the young Nigerian the opportunity to test himself in one of Europe’s competitive domestic leagues and continue his development at the professional level.
John has already set his sights on making an immediate impact and is determined to justify the confidence shown in him by his new club.
“I promise to work diligently and make a positive impression during the 2026/27 season,” he said. “I’m eager to wear the jersey and give my all for the club and the fans.”
The exciting young forward joins Nyíregyháza from Nigerian academy side 36 Lion FC, completing a move that gives him his first opportunity to showcase his talent in European football.
Nyíregyháza Spartacus, popularly known as “Szpari”, compete in Hungary’s top division, the Nemzeti Bajnokság I (NB I), and John has signed a three-year contract with the club.
After taking the first major step by securing his maiden professional contract, “Pankere” will be hoping that his journey in Hungary is only the beginning of a long and successful career in European football.
