Ghana international Gideon Mensah has officially embarked on a new chapter in his European career after sealing a move to German Bundesliga outfit FC Köln on a free transfer, signing a contract that will keep him at the club until 2028.
The experienced left-back switches to Germany following the expiration of his deal with French side AJ Auxerre, bringing an end to a successful four-year spell in which he developed into one of the club’s most reliable performers.
Mensah heads to the Bundesliga with his reputation further enhanced after an outstanding showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 27-year-old was ever-present for the Black Stars, playing every single minute of Ghana’s four matches as they progressed to the Round of 32 before bowing out after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
Ghana defender Gideon Mensah set to sign two-year contract with FC Köln
His availability on the transfer market attracted considerable attention after contract renewal negotiations with Auxerre failed to produce an agreement, allowing FC Köln to secure the services of one of Ghana’s most experienced defenders without paying a transfer fee.
Last season, Mensah proved instrumental in Auxerre’s successful battle against relegation in Ligue 1. He featured in 30 league matches, contributing two assists while providing consistency, leadership and defensive assurance throughout the campaign.
His journey with the French club began in 2021 when he arrived on loan before completing a permanent transfer a year later. Over the following seasons, the former Red Bull Salzburg defender established himself as a cornerstone of Auxerre’s backline through his disciplined defending, attacking support and wealth of top-flight experience.
