Former Nigeria U-23 international Godswill Ekpolo has exclusively confirmed to Footy-Africa that his future at AEK Larnaca is secure after the Cypriot side activated the extension clause in his contract.
The 30-year-old defender initially joined Larnaca on a free transfer from Apollon Limassol ahead of the 2024/25 season, signing a one-year deal with the option of an additional year. With speculation suggesting his contract was close to expiring, Ekpolo has now moved to clarify the situation.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, the experienced full-back revealed that the optional clause has been triggered, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2027.
“I saw the article written about my contract situation when it was published but there is a little adjustment to it,” Ekpolo explained.
“I have one more year left with Larnaca and not three months. There was something in it, it was optional and it has been renewed automatically.
I will be with the club for another year and after that we will see how it goes, but I want to say that the clause about an extension has been renewed. I enjoy working with the club and I want to help them do well. That is my focus for now.”
A product of the famed La Masia academy at FC Barcelona, Ekpolo has built a well-travelled career across Europe, featuring for clubs in England, Spain, Sweden and Cyprus, including Fleetwood Town, Mérida AD, BK Häcken and IFK Norrköping.
This season, the dependable defender has been a mainstay for Larnaca, making 20 league appearances in the Cypriot top flight and contributing one assist as the club pushes for a strong finish.
