Brazilian side Grêmio have reportedly stopped winger Francis Amuzu from joining the Black Stars ahead of Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team.

Reports from journalist Filipe Duarte indicate that the Brazilian club were informed that Amuzu had been summoned to report to the national team camp on Thursday, May 14.

Despite the invitation, Grêmio declined to release the 26-year-old attacker, pointing to the short notice of the call-up as well as a demanding schedule of fixtures against Confiança, Bahia, Palestino and Santos.

The setback comes just as Amuzu was preparing to make his long-awaited debut for Ghana under newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Born in Ghana before relocating to Belgium at a young age, Amuzu previously featured for Belgium at youth level and had initially rejected a Black Stars approach in 2022, maintaining that he still hoped to represent Belgium at senior level.

However, the winger recently opted to commit his international future to Ghana and was on course to earn his maiden senior appearance before Grêmio’s decision.

Ghana’s clash with Mexico is expected to play a key role in the team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
