After days of mounting uncertainty and regional anxiety, Kenya has finally settled its $30 million (approximately KSh 3.9 billion) hosting fee to the Confederation of African Football, restoring confidence in its role as a co-host of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The payment brings relief not only within Kenya but also across its co-hosting partners, Uganda and Tanzania, who had already fulfilled their financial obligations and were watching closely as the deadline loomed.

Just days earlier, doubts had intensified after it emerged that Nairobi was at risk of missing the March 30 cutoff. Officials had openly acknowledged delays, and concerns deepened when lawmakers were informed that stalled stadium upgrades. reportedly due to unpaid contractors, were threatening preparations.

The situation cast a shadow over the much-celebrated East African “Pamoja” bid, raising uncomfortable questions about readiness and coordination among the three nations.

But in a decisive turnaround, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed that the government had acted in time to honor its commitments.

“The Government of Kenya has fully met its financial and institutional obligations to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as we steadily advance towards co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” Mvurya said.

“In fulfilment of our commitments, the Government has remitted the requisite USD 30 million hosting fee to CAF, reaffirming Kenya’s credibility, readiness, and unwavering commitment to delivering a successful continental tournament.”

The payment effectively extinguishes immediate fears of disruption and restores momentum to the tri-nation hosting project. With all three countries now financially aligned, attention is expected to shift back to infrastructure delivery, logistics, and meeting CAF standards ahead of the continental showpiece.

For the Pamoja partnership, this moment serves as both a warning and a reset, proof that while challenges remain, the ambition to deliver a historic East African AFCON is still firmly intact.
