Ghana defender Derrick Kohn says he is determined to make a strong impression with the Black Stars after earning a call-up for this month’s international friendlies against Austria and Germany.

In an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa, the Union Berlin left-back spoke of his excitement at being part of the squad and his desire to establish himself in Otto Addo’s plans.

“I’m really happy to be back with the team,” Kohn said. “Every call-up means a lot to me, and I just want to give everything I have for Ghana. It’s always an honour to wear the shirt.”

Kohn’s path to the national team has not been straightforward. Although he had previously been invited, administrative issues delayed his eligibility. The situation was resolved in December 2025, allowing him to finally make his debut during the Kirin Cup, where he featured against Japan.

Reflecting on that moment, the 26-year-old described it as a turning point in his international career.

“It was a special feeling to finally play for Ghana after everything,” he exclusively told Footy-Africa. “I had been waiting for that chance for a long time, so to step onto the pitch was something I will always remember.”

Addo set to leave out Ayew for Austria and Germany games

Now back in the squad, Kohn is focused on building momentum and strengthening his case for a place in Ghana’s plans ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Of course, every player wants to be part of a World Cup squad,” he added. “But for me, it’s about taking it step by step, working hard in training and showing the coaches that I can help the team.”

The upcoming fixtures carry added significance for the defender, who was born in Hamburg, as Ghana prepare to face Germany in Stuttgart.

“It will be a very special game for me,” Kohn said. “Germany is my birthplace, so it’s emotional, but once the game starts, my focus is fully on Ghana and doing my job.”

Ghana will take on Austria in Vienna on March 27 before facing Germany three days later, as preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup.
